Orbiflon - Shaft Seals for Bearing Protection


The Problem

Packings or mechanical seals are normally used when rotating shafts have to be sealed off from the medium against the atmosphere. In principle, sealing elements of this type can seal off any medium at any pressure from the atmosphere.
Packings are not leakage-free and cause damage to sleeves. Mechanical seals are leakage-free but relatively expensive in comparison.

Conventional radial sealing rings or oil seals are used in applications where there is only low pressure or no pressure on the medium side.
The result is always the same: the seal fails due to shaft wear caused by static contact between the sealing lip and the dynamic, rotating shaft.

In the case of rotating shafts on a gear unit, the lubricant has to be prevented from escaping to the outside and at the same time be protected from contamination by dust, dirt and moisture from the outside.
Conventional radial sealing rings or oil rings soon come up against their limits, however, for example in the case of gearing housings on pumps or in the case of dry-running shafts on fans or mixers or the like. They are simply not intended for such applications.

The Solution

Orbiflon was developed by DEPAC as a reliable, safe and cost-effective option for sealing rotating shafts which have to be sealed off from the medium side at up to 1bar.

The special and unique Teflon/graphite compound is preloaded through forming of the geometrically perfect sealing lips. Automatic readjustment of the lips in relation to the shaft is thus assured even in the event of wear.
The Teflon/graphite compound releases graphite which settles on the shaft surface at the point of contact. Friction is practically confined to between the graphite layer and the seal lip. Wear on the shaft is minimized.

Orbiflon can be manufactured in all sizes up to 1000mm and be used at speeds up to 20m/sec. The unique lip geometry permits the most diverse arrangements to suit the application.
DEPAC can also manufacture and deliver metal adapters to match existing units.
